Founded in 1791 with land donated by the states of Maryland and Virginia, Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia) is a special federal district that is not part of any state. The three separate branches of the U.S. federal government – Congress, the Supreme Court, and the office of the President – are headquartered in the District. The sectors of government, tourism, finance, non-profit and scientific research are some of the most prominent sources of employment in Washington, D.C. and in recent years the District has been expanding its economic base to include other sectors.
