Specifications include, but are not limited to:. Surveys will be scheduled by individual UDWR employees according to need. As such, no definitive projects or timeline can be provided; however, below are some general guidelines on what surveys should be expected each year.Elk/Moose: We survey 25 elk units (9 units are also surveyed for moose) once every 3 years. We generally survey around 8 units each winter during January and February. Each unit takes an average of 4 days to fly, but this varies depending on the size of the unit.Bighorn Sheep: We survey 13 units for bighorn sheep once every 2-3 years. We survey around 7 units each year during November and December. In general each unit takes about 3 days to fly.Mountain Goats: We survey 7 units for mountain goats once every 2 years. Surveys are generally conducted in August and September. The surveys take between 1 and 4 days depending on the unit being flown.Bison: Utah has 2 bison herds. The Henry Mountains in southeastern Utah are surveyed for bison every year in July or August. The surveys last for 2 days. The other herd is in eastern Utah (Book Cliffs) and is flown every other year in January or February.
