Specifications include, but are not limited to: The first iteration of Indianapolis Union Station opened in 1853 and was the firstknown station in the world that brought multiple railroad companies and passengerservices under one roof. The building was owned by the Indianapolis Union RailwayCompany, a consortium of several different railway companies (the Madison &Indianapolis, the Terre Haute & Richmond, and the Indianapolis & Bellefontaine). TheIndianapolis Union Railway exists today as a terminal railroad and is owned andoperated by CSX. Train traffic quickly outgrew available space within Union Station.By 1886, a new Union Station had been constructed on the site with twelvepassenger tracks. In 1923, the City embarked on a public works effort to elevate thetracks through Downtown in an effort to relieve traffic blockages caused by stoppedtrains across streets. Around the same time, Indianapolis saw over 200 dailypassenger trains to cities across the country.
