The Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards program is the longest running, largest and most prestigious student recognition program in the United States. The Awards program was established in 1923 by M. R. Robinson to encourage, foster, and reward creativity in our Nations youth. Throughout the programs history, the Awards program has recognized some of our Nations most celebrated artists and writers. Each year, more than 250,000 public and private school entries from grades 7-12 are submitted to a network of 80 regional sponsors who screen the entries and conduct local exhibitions and award ceremonies. The most outstanding artworks are awarded the highest honor and receive the American Vision Award and the Regional Gold Key finalist. These finalists go on to represent their region in the National judging held each March in New York City. Panels of distinguished artists review over 15,000 works of art and select the national award recipients. These recipients receive national recognition and share monetary awards and/or scholarships offered by prestigious colleges, universities and art institutes.Young Artists of Hawaii Student Art Exhibition at the Hawaii State Art Museum:The Contractor will coordinate the Young Artists of Hawaii Student Art Exhibition for students from kindergarten to grade six. Professional artists and art educators approved by the SFCA will be invited to select artworks for this exhibition. The SFCA staff, with assistance from the Contractor, will install the student artworks. The Contractor shall coordinate the award ceremony for this exhibition. The Young Artists of Hawaii student art exhibition is a program established by the SFCA to recognize and display student artwork in accordance with Section 9-4, Hawaii Revised Statutes. The program is funded through the Works of Art Special Fund and provides opportunities for public and private school students to participate in a juried art competition, much like the prestigious biennial, Artists of Hawaii exhibition, hosted by the Honolulu Museum of Art (formerly the Honolulu Academy of Arts). Permanent display facilities were designed by SFCA and constructed for the P Kamalii Courtyard at the Hawaii Convention Center and a competitive annual exhibition was developed by SFCA in cooperation with the Department of Education, Hawaii Association of Independent Schools, and the Honolulu Museum of Art. Today this consortium has grown to include the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the Hawaii Convention Center where printed reproductions of the artwork exhibited at the Hawaii State Art Museum are displayed year-round.All public, private, and home school students, kindergarten through sixth grade, are encouraged to participate in the Young Artists of Hawaii competition. The annual theme, My Family, My Culture, and Me, will inspire students to express how they feel, see, or interpret their island home. Each school submits works for judging at the state level. A
