Specifications include, but are not limited to:The Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR), on behalf of the University of Arizona, is soliciting proposals to furnish the University with a high-resolution, analytical scanning/transmission electron microscope (S/TEM), configured to provide rapid, atomic-scale chemical and structural information. The combination of high sensitivity and high spatial resolution elemental mapping, coupled with state-of-the-art imaging, will constitute a regionally unique instrument for the development and characterization of atomic-scale heterogeneous materials, including engineering, optical, electronic, energy, and planetary materials. Measurement capabilities of proposed instrumentation must include (but are not limited to): high-resolution (phase-contrast) imaging, scanning-based TEM (STEM) imaging, electron diffraction, and chemical analysis via energy-dispersive X-ray and electron energy-loss spectroscopies. The equipment to be procured will form the cornerstone of the new Electron Microscopy Core being established within the University of Arizonas Gerard P. Kuiper Space Sciences building. The research, research training, technological development, and outreach efforts enabled by this facility will make it a showcase for modern measurement science throughout the Southwestern United States. Given the diversity of the user base and broad scope of use for this instrumentation, the microscope interface must not only meet the minimum required specifications listed later within this document, but must also operate efficiently and be suitable for a multi-user environment. Vendor proposed instrumentation is also expected to enable this new core to meet the Universitys four key attributes of core facilities: Unique: proposed instrumentation shall provide capabilities not available elsewhere on campus and, if feasible, within the Southwestern United States. Emphasis will also be placed on the ability to upgrade instrumentation or maintain equipment at leading-edge capability via other means, such as guaranteed trade-in or salvage values
