Specifications include, but are not limited to:The Project is comprised of the following two primary programmatic elements:Robotics LaboratoriesStudent Organization Work SpaceAs a result of the Universitys MnDRIVE initiative, robotics is becoming an increasingly important component of the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) sponsored research portfolio. Current laboratory space for robotics research is dispersed among several buildings (Keller Hall, Smith Hall, and Walter Library) and is not adequate to support new faculty hires made under the MnDRIVE initiative. The new robotics laboratory in Hasselmo Hall is helpful, but at 4,000 square feet is not large enough to accommodate our growing robotics program.CSEs student organizations continually struggle to find space to carry out their work and often have to do their work in dormitory rooms or garages off campus. Having centralized space dedicated to our students will help build an even stronger sense of community among this important group of student leaders. The proposed Project aims to consolidate several existing robotics research laboratories and also provide needed expansion space for additional faculty, staff, and students. Having the robotics researchers located in contiguous space will also assist in enhancing important collaborations. The proposed Project will also include work/collaboration space for multiple student organizations in the CSE. Examples include the Solar Vehicle Project, Engineers Without Borders, Innovative Engineers, and the Clean Snowmobile. CSE has over 70 recognized student organizations with hundreds of participants. The proposed location is the first and second floors of Shepherd Labs, located at 100 Union Street SE. The assumption is that the space will be gutted including removing all interior walls, flooring, and ceilings. All the program spaces on Level 1 and 2, with the exception of the Characterization Facility lab and office on Level 2, will get new finishes.
