Specifications include, but are not limited to: Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) including the sampler membranes and associated deployment parts are needed for passive sampling of pharmaceuticals at various locations of nearshore waters in Puget Sound. The passive sampler samples chemicals from the dissolved phase, mimicking the respiratory exposure of aquatic organisms. Three components are needed for a complete POCIS: 1)Ninety (90) Hydrophilic-Lipophilic-Balanced, water-wettable, reversed-phase sorbent membranes. The POCIS disc consists of a solid material (sorbent) contained between two microporous polyethersulfone membranes. The membranes allow water and dissolved chemical to pass through to the sorbent where chemicals are trapped. Larger materials such as sediment and particulate matter are excluded. The membrane should resist biofouling. The POCIS disc needs to be composed of two sheets of microporous (0.1m pore size) polyethersulfone membrane encasing a solid phase sorbent (Oasis HLB). The Oasis HLB is a universal solid-phase extraction sorbent widely used for sampling a large range of hydrophilic to lipophilic organic chemicals from water. The surface area of each sheet should measure 47.5cm each which retains the chemicals of interest. The sheets need to be enclosed with an upper and lower stainless steel support ring used to seal the POCIS microporous membranes and prevent any loss of the sorbent.
