The City of San Luis Obispo is the County Seat for San Luis Obispo County and as such, it is also thegovernmental, economic, medical and educational hub for the other cities in the county. San Luis Obispo has a population of roughly45,119 (Source: 2010 Census) with an estimated additional population of 20,000 students when California PolyTechnic StateUniversity is in session.B. Service DescriptionSLO TRANSIT is the local fixed-route transit operation for the City of San Luis Obispo, operating directly out of the Citys Public WorksDepartment. SLO TRANSIT operates 10 vehicles at peak along eight fixed-routes within the 23 square miles of the city limits of SanLuis Obispo and California PolyTechnic State University. SLO TRANSIT operates Monday through Friday approximately from 6 a.m. to10 p.m. and Sat & Sun from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. See Appendix A Route Schedules & Stats for actual schedule information.SLO TRANSIT has seen steady increase in ridership over the last ten years and now transports over 1.1 Million riders annually. SLOTRANSIT ridership demographics reflect a broad cross section of riders, including: seniors, disabled, socially or economic transitdependent, K-12 students, collegial students, working professionals and choice riders. Operation and maintenance of all fixed-routeservices are contracted out to a third party vendor.For para-transit services within the service area the countys consolidated para-transit service provider known as Run-About. RunAboutis operated by SLO Regional Transit Authority (RTA) and who also provides inter-city services to the other cities and parts ofthe county. Therefore this contract does not include the operations of para-transit rather only local fixed route services.The public has direct access for participating in the improvements and management of SLO TRANSIT services. By direction of the CityCouncil, a Mass Transit Committee (MTC) was formed in 1972 to provide them with input on matters related to transit. Thecommittee is an advisory body comprised of nine-member citizen volunteers representing communities with Disabilities, Seniors,Students, Cal Poly University, Business, Technical, At-Large and two Alternatives. Their purpose is to gather input and representationof the general public on matters of setting priorities and planning processes.
