Specifications include, but are not limited to:This project will perform enhanced inspections such as video and laser ring inspections, compare results to visual inspections anddocument both the benefits and costs of enhanced inspections. This project would compile enhanced inspection guidelines andstandards used by other states and provide best practices for use by MnDOT. Best practices should address: when and where to useenhanced inspection; identify costs and benefits of enhanced inspection methods; differences in criteria between different assets, materials, site conditions and purpose of inspection. Researchers will suggest options for implementing enhanced inspectionkeeping in mind budgetary and staffing limitations.Field work will be conducted to compare the results from different inspection methods and to develop criteria that can be used byDistricts when deciding if enhanced inspection is justified. Comparison of inspection methods will be made at existing fieldinstallations, the major focus will be on culvert locations. When identifying sites to use for inspection comparisons, an effort shouldbe made to include pipes that can be used again in future projects to evaluate culvert material performance and durability as well aslook at past repairs. Other considerations in site selection are the availability of existing video, sites needed to meet objectives of theproject, proximity of sites to each other and sites that include a mixture of pipe materials. The project will develop the following end-user products:- Best practices manual to assist MnDOT Districts in deciding when enhanced inspection is justified. The manual should providetechnical advice used to assess contractor proposals for doing different types of pipe inspection including video and/or laserring inspections.- Special Provision or Construction Specification for use in incorporating video/laser ring inspection or other methods ofenhanced pipe inspection for pipe acceptance.- Inspections of selected pipes using multiple methods, including videos, laser ring and visual inspections.- Communication plan that describes how this information will be brought into use by MnDOT.- Training PowerPoint and presentation materials for use by MnDOT staff for future outreach activities.- Up to 3 training sessions presented by researchers using the training PowerPoint
