Specifications include, but are not limited to: Pennsylvania has more than 8.9 million licensed drivers with roughly 1.8 million of those drivers age 65 or older. According to the 2010 US Census Bureau, Pennsylvania is the fourth largest state in population that is age 65 or older and the Pennsylvania State Data Center statistics indicate that the number of Pennsylvanians 65 and older will increase by another 21 percent by 2020. In fact, licensing data shows that from 2005-2014, the number of drivers 65 and over has increased by 21%.Crash data also shows that mature driver reportable crashes and fatalities in Pennsylvania have seen slight increases over the last several years. Additionally, since 2010, fatalities in crashes involving mature drivers have increased 13% while traffic deaths overall in Pennsylvania continue to decline to a record low of 1,195 in 2014. Research shows that older drivers tend to self-regulate their driving as they are usually aware of deficiencies they may have. With crashes and fatalities for older driver continuing to rise, PennDOT is seeking a supplier to conduct focus group research to better understand mature driver needs and identify avenues to reach our mature drivers to help prevent motor vehicle crashes within this age group. The findings of this research will be used to develop and revise mature driver safety materials and communications.
