Specifications include, but are not limited to: Based on a collection survey conducted in the mid-1980s, at least one-third of the volumes in campus library collections are brittle or destined to become so because of acidic paper. This amounts to millions of volumes in UW-Madison campus collections. (UW-Madisons libraries held 9,575,506 volumes, according to association of Research Libraries Statistics for fiscal year 2013-2014.) Paper made from about 1850 to approximately the late 1970s is almost universally acidic. While paper mills in Western Europe and North America have now largely converted to production of alkaline paper, the libraries continue to collect materials from areas of the world that still publish on acidic paper. These include the vitally important areas of Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and Africa. Mass deacidification is a process in which paper-based library materials are treated, in order to neutralize acid in paper and to resist the re-formation of acids through deposit of an alkaline reserve.
