The renovationwill provide support for new academic programs as well as space for student science organizations, astudent lounge complete with library extension services, group study halls with state of the arttechnology, and a learning center. The Planetarium currently reaches about 3000 visitors a year, manyof whom are elementary school students. Renovations will expand the Planetarium into a sciencecenter, with an aquarium, designated space for permanent science exhibits, and a room set up forclassroom-style demonstrations and interactive activities. These renovations will also enhance thePlanetarium itself. Replacement of the 35-year-old seats and flooring is planned as well as modificationsto the electrical and projection systems. The Observatory on the roof has a 16-inch telescope and domethat was installed in 1982. Access to the Observatory requires going up a very steep stairway/ladder,and the Observatory only accommodates about 10 people at a time. The dome and dome slit are oldand balky and move with difficulty. The observatory itself will be expanded to safely accommodatemore people. The roof is also valuable for astronomy viewing events featuring smaller telescopes so aviewing deck with railings will be installed. A telescope with CCD (digital camera) capabilities will beinstalled, and a video feed delivered to the Planetarium. Classrooms and labs will be upgraded to offera hands-on learning experiences enhanced by technology. The greenhouse used as a lab will berelocated to a more appropriate area of campus to take advantage of a more natural surrounding andenvironment.
