Specifications include, but are not limited to:Interested proposers shall train at least two scent detection dogs and handler to find Louisiana pine snakes in their natural habitat in western Louisiana. The proposer will coordinate with LDWF and the USFWS to set up a validation course that is acceptable to both agencies. This certification course will provide the agencies with a detection rate/probability of the dog team locating a known presence of a snake. LDWF can provide snakes with transmitters to assist in this validation course.Once the validation course is completed and report is submitted, both the USFWS and LDWF will evaluate the report and decide whether detection capabilities are successful enough to proceed with the eleven weeks of field surveys. If the validation course is deemed successful, the dog teams will be required to conduct eleven (11) weeks of surveys within the snakes habitat. The surveys will consist of three (3) to four (4) hours of nose time per day. Nose time is defined as the amount of time dogs are actually surveying for pine snakes and shall not include any logistical, set up, or travel time. A week of survey is defined as five (5) surveys per week or at least 17 hours of nose time over a five (5) day period. These surveys will be conducted to document locations of snake and to clear areas of snakes. These surveys will be conducted using a variety of strategies from cursorial surveys to strict transect surveys. The surveys will be conducted in suitable pine snake habitat which includes sandy well drained soils. LDWF staff will be present to assist survey teams with permission to access property, handle snakes, and complete all necessary field documentation. The dog teams will be responsible to conducting the surveys, handling the dogs, and let LDWF staff know when dogs have located a Louisiana pine snake.
