Specifications include, but are not limited to:The California Department of Education and the Los Angeles Unified School District Elementary,Division of Instruction requires our pedagogical approach to literacy to be balanced.* To achieve thisaim, students and their teachers must have access to a wide range of book titles, both digital and physicalbooks, organized by student reading levels (correlated to Lexile, A-Z or Fountas and Pinnell readinglevels), adequate book sets for small group instruction and independent reading, an inventory system,and instructional guides accompanying each title. The California Department of Education recommendsteachers engage in the following: Teach students how to use reading comprehension strategies to help them understand and retain whatthey read. Teach students to identify and use the texts organizational structure to comprehend, learn, andremember content. Guide students through focused, high-quality discourse and discussion on the meaning of text. Select texts purposefully to support comprehension development. Establish an engaging, motivating, and authentic context in which to teach reading comprehension. Ensure that texts are compelling enough to spark discussion; in other words, the topic should beinteresting to the children and the discussion should be worth having. Prepare higher-order critical thinking questions that prompt children to think more deeply about thetext Ask follow-up questions to encourage and facilitate rich discussion. Provide rich vocabulary and language development opportunities. Provide opportunities, with ample scaffolding, for children to engage in peer-led discussions.
