Specifications include, but are not limited to: The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Lakes and Ponds Management and Protection Section is looking for assistance in the development of a Sediment Diatom Index for Vermonts inland lakes . The sediment diatoms in 10 discrete sediment samples from 6 inland lakes in Vermont need to be cleaned, identified to species (whenever possible) and counted by a sediment diatom taxonomist. This data will need to be combined with sediment diatom data from 68 other inland lakes in the state to develop a sediment diatom index for Vermonts inland lakes. Physio-chemical variables (water quality parameters and shoreland condition metrics collected during the summer index period when the sediment diatoms were collected) will be used to determine the ecological condition of each lake. Each lakes condition assessment will be checked against any long term data that the Lakes and Ponds Section may have for the lake. The physio-chemical variables will be used to develop a diatom index for Vermonts lakes. Sediment diatom data and the same physio-chemical variables measured in the Northern Appalachian (NAP) Ecoregion during the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Lake Assessment (NLA) will be used as a training set. Using the sediment diatom index, sediment diatom data from deeper core depths will then be used to characterize the condition of the lakes in pre-colonial times.
