Specifications include, but are not limited to:Iowa State University (ISU) requests proposals to provide and install a new Thermal-Mechanical PhysicalSimulation system for the Material Science and Engineering (MSE) Department per the specifications. Thisthermal mechanical physical simulation system will be used for multiple research applications as well assupporting selected undergraduate courses. This system will be part of Dr. Collins research laboratory, and willsupport other capacities being developed at ISU-MSE (e.g., the Combinatorial Materials Development capacity).The ability to conduct precise thermo-mechanical simulations for metallic specimens, as well as induceengineered thermal gradients, mechanical test specimens at a variety of temperatures, and conduct melting andforging simulations is desired.More specifically, for research, the system will include but not be limited to the following:1. Complex multi-step thermal cycles of a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metallic alloys including thosebased upon: titanium, nickel, aluminum, cobalt, magnesium, and zirconium. This includes direct quench andage studies to aging temperatures ranging from ~50C to >0.8*Tmelting-point via Joule heating2. Forging simulation at various strain rates and temperatures, including the determination of flow curves3. Powder consolidation and sintering4. Mechanical testing, including creep simulation tests (strain rate=10-5), at temperatures ranging from roomtemperature to the melting point of a variety of alloys5. Establishment of designed thermal gradients to study microstructural evolution as a function of temperaturein single specimens.6. Diffusion Bonding7. Simulation of additive manufacturing cyclesPrior to award of any contract, ISU reserves the right to request sample runs in order to verify the proposedsystem will be acceptable to the University.SpecificationsSystems offered must meet the minimum specificationsstated below: Capable of performing aforementioned research applications Direct resistance (Joule) heating of metallic specimens Up to 10,000C/s heating rate, or similar High-speed hydraulic servo system & load frame with approx. 20HP pump, capable of the following: Approx. 20 Metric tons of force in compression / approx. 10 metric tons in tension
