Specifications include, but are not limited to:. Project Description: The project consists of updating the existing fire protection for the two CU Boulder Powerhouse turbines. The turbines are each surrounded by a custom enclosure that provides both physical protection, sound abatement, and airflow ducting. This provides several operational advantages but also creates a unique fire hazard. These types of enclosures are able to be protected with various types of suppression; below is a description of the existing system to be removed and the specifications for the new system to be provided. The existing fire protection includes two systems, on dedicated to each turbine enclosure. The systems each include 4 optical detectors, 5 heat detectors, 2 manual release stations, 5 high current draw red beacons, and a dedicated fire control panel. The fire suppression includes 204# of Halon 1301 stored in 4 cylinders, with 51# each. Each turbine enclosure has 4 cylinders, and they all match in size and functionality so that the system is modular. The Halon is discharged through schedule 40 seamless type 304 stainless steel piping and fittings. Two of the Halon cylinders discharge in approximately 10 seconds and two of the Halon cylinders meter the remaining Halon into the enclosure over a period of 60 to 120 seconds (extended discharge per NFPA 12A). The Halon cylinders manufacture date is approximately 1990. The cylinders are becoming more difficult to repair or find parts for. Halon is no longer manufactured as of the signing of the Montreal Protocol agreed to by the U.S. in the mid 90s. The existing system is to be updated by providing new fire suppression agent, new intelligent addressable control panels, and re-use of the existing field devices. The new agent shall be FE-25 (ECARO) manufactured by DuPont and stored in Fike DOT4WB rated cylinders. The agent quantity and flow rates shall be calculated to provide a minimum design concentration for a class B hazard and shall account for fuel type per NFPA 2001. The initial discharge shall meet the requirements for NFPA 2001 total flooding and shall discharge 95% of the design concentration between 6 and 10 seconds. An equal amount of FE-25 agent shall flow as an extended discharge lasting approximately 60 to 120 seconds. The existing stainless steel piping and fittings may be re-used; contractor to verify mounting hardware is in good condition and shall replace where necessary. Nozzles shall be replaced with Fike UL Listed, FM Approved engineered nozzles brass or aluminum. Flow calculations shall be performed to verify agent delivery times and expected design concentrations. The existing AutoPulse conventional control panels shall be disconnected and removed. The new panels shall both be the Fike Cheetah Xi intelligent control panel (capacity 50 or 254). The panels shall be mounted inside the turbine control cabinets in a location approved by the maintenance supervisor. The control cabinets are very full, so panel mounting will require a custom unistrut (or similar) platform to be provided and installed by the fire protection contractor. The existing fire system wiring between the turbine control cabinets and the external junction cabinets located on the outside of each turbine enclosure may be re-used. New addressable modules are to be provided and mounted inside the external junction cabinet
