Specifications include, but are not limited to:The hospital conducts fire drills every 12 months from the date of the last drill in allfreestanding buildings classified as business occupancies and in which patients are seen ortreated.Note: In leased or rented facilities, drills need be conducted only in areas of the building that thehospital occupies.EP3 When quarterly fire drills are required, at least 50% are unannounced. Fire drills are held atunexpected times and under varying conditions.EP4 Staff who work in buildings where patients are housed or treated participate in drillsaccording to the hospitals fire response plan.Note: When drills are conducted between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., the hospital may usealternative methods to notify staff instead of activating audible alarms.EP5 The hospital critiques fire drills to evaluate fire safety equipment, fire safety buildingfeatures, and staff response to fire. The evaluation is documented.ODHFire Drills K-50o Ensure that the facility administration has a plan that has been distributed for the protection ofall persons in the event of fire, for their evacuation to areas of refuge, and for their evacuationfrom the building when necessary. Establish a system to ensure that all employees areperiodically instructed and kept informed with respect to their duties under the plan.o Monitor fire drills to ensure that the drill includes the transmission of a fire alarm signal andsimulation of emergency fire conditions. Document receipt or verification of call to the remotemonitoring company.o Monitor fire drills to ensure that drills are held quarterly, per shift, at unexpected times andunder varying conditions.o Maintain documentation concerning fire drills for the preceding 12 months that shows at leastthe following:o Differing times for drills conducted on each shift. Drills should be conducted at various timesthroughout the shift to avoid patterns. Fire drills that occur within one hour may be consideredas having occurred at the same time
