Specifications include, but are not limited to:Family Group Decision Making (FGDM) is a planning and decision-making process that includes parents, caregivers, children, extended family, Department social workers, Department clinicians and other informal representatives of the family. The process is family-centered, family strengths-oriented, culturally based and community based. The process requires having a neutral objective third-person facilitate/coordinate the FGDM process, someone who is not connected with services provided by the Department. The coordinator does not participate in decision-making and does not make recommendations, provide therapy or offer opinions about the case. Prior experience in coordination of FGDM would be helpful but not required; experience in child welfare, knowledge of family-centered practice, experience in delivering family services and/or other group coordination experience would be valuable, along with exceptional organization and leadership skills.FGDM is a non-adversarial process that provides families with the opportunity to develop solutions and make important decisions related to their children. The purpose of the process is to reach agreement on the issues to be addressed, get the best thinking of family and service providers in developing plans that offer solutions and help these partners plan how they will work together to carry out the plans. The Department believes that families must be consistently involved in making decisions about protecting and ensuring the safety for their children. In addition, it is believed that family involvement in identifying needed assistance and in the development of a case plan will increase their willingness to support and accept services.FGDM meetings can be convened at any time in the life of a case when there are important issues to address that require input and planning from both family members and professionals. For example, circumstances in a case where FGDM might be considered include:Developing a safety plan to preserve the family and prevent children from entering into foster care;Developing a service plan; andDeveloping a permanency plan and selecting a permanent home for the child.Initial approval of FGDM plans will be made by the Departments social worker/clinician and his/her supervisor. The criterion for approval includes the following:
