Specifications

Specifications include, but are not limited to: Since 2000, technological advances in the quality of digital photography and photographicenhancement techniques (DStretch software http://www.dstretch.com/index.html) have the ability to reveal Native American rock imagerythat may be difficult or impossible to see with the unaided eye. As a result, there is a need tophotographically survey the existing climbing routes at Hueco Tanks with this newer software todetermine if there is imagery in any of these areas that may have previously gone undetected. The main goal of the project is to record all climbing areas and determine if imagery existswithin them. As with the 1999/2000 rock imagery survey, the condition of any newly discoveredrock imagery shall be documented. Additionally, any new findings must be incorporated withthe results of the 1999/2000 survey into the latest versions of ArcGIS and Portfolio (http://www.extensis.com/ ) or an equal photo database program. The 1999/2000 images willremain as a stand-alone set of data within the photo database to be used as a monitoring tool. The final rock imagery database and photo gallery resulting from the project will provide anupdated planning tool to identify areas where climbing activities should not be allowed due to their potential impact to rock imagery and will continue to be used by TPWD personnel tomonitor the condition of the imagery at Hueco Tanks. In addition, the resulting database willgive researchers the means to easily study digital images of the rock imagery at Hueco Tanks andperhaps gain a greater understanding of these figures.
