Specifications include, but are not limited to: Buses shall have a minimum expected life of twelve (12) years or 500,000 miles, whichever comes first, and are intended for the widest possible spectrum of passengers, including children, adults, the elderly and people with disabilities. The bus shall be designed to be a large, three-axle, heavy-duty, low floor, double deck transit bus , city bus operations. Lavatories shall not be included. The unit shall be comprised of one (1) unit not to exceed forty-three (43) feet in length, with an overall height of not more than 14 feet including all GPS and communication antennas, as per Washington State Law. Maximum height of antennas is 3 inches. The bus shall be the manufacturer's latest production model; experimental or prototype units shall be considered unacceptable. As further described, the bus shall be outfitted with various components and in all cases, materials must be new and furnished as specified. Where brand names or specific items are used in these specifications, consider the term "approved equal" to follow. Wherever such names appear, approved equals will be considered if presented to the Consortium member in writing (see Section IP 6. Questions, Clarifications and Omissions.) Propulsion units shall be mounted at rear of the bus, completely separate from the passenger compartment. The engine, engine appurtenances, automatic transmission and controls, and differential ratio shall be compatible, provide a rate of acceleration and speed at gross bus weight rating (GVWR) with all auxiliary equipment in operation, providing performance as specified in this document. Bus shall be proposed with diesel propulsion systems. Diesel/hybrid propulsion systems shall be priced as an option in Section IP 17 Supplemental Equipment and Services Pricing and on FRM 20 Pricing Schedule. CNG is not acceptable. All design factors shall take into consideration the safety of the passengers. Items requiring safety considerations in design include but are not limited to: Elimination of sharp corners or edges, and pinch or bump hazards Safe and timely operation of passenger doors Locations for grab-rails and stanchions Grab-rails on seats No obstructions in aisles Implementation of Federal Motor Bus Safety Standards Intensity and distribution of interior lighting Exterior lighting at doorways
