Specifications

Specifications include, but are not limited to: The Wisconsin Innocence Project (WIP) is a clinical program run out of the University of Wisconsin Law School that provides pro-bono legal assistance to wrongfully convicted persons and works to remedy the causes of wrongful convictions. As part of our program, law students work with supervising attorneys to investigate and litigate claims of innocence. In many cases, forensic DNA testing is conducted as part of the investigationprocess. In addition to proving innocence, DNA testing often helps identify the real perpetrator. Post-conviction DNA testing is governed by Wisconsin statute and may be granted at the expense of the state or the defendant. In our cases, post-conviction DNA testing from the Wisconsin State Crime Lab may not be an option because the State Crime Lab works primarily for prosecutors and raises the potential for conflicts.
