Specifications include, but are not limited to:The Contractor will provide all labor, equipment, and other supplies (including safety equipment, fuel, and transportation) and services necessary for cutting and mulching trees, brush and vegetation in treatment areas to reduce woody encroachment and restore grasslands.The Contractor will be provided with treatment area boundaries and will be expected to navigate and find treatment areas in the fields. The DNR Project Manager will provide clarification, including ground marking if necessary, upon request of the Contractor.Prior to the start of work in treatment areas, the Contractor and DNR Project Manage will mutually agree to the location of the equipment staging area and the equipment access routes to the fields. The Contractor shall not create or alter access routes without approval by the DNR Project Manager.Equipment may work within and immediately adjacent to wetlands provided there is no disturbance of streams, stream banks, or wetlands soils by equipment or by fallen trees and no ruts are created.The Contractor will clear from the treatment areas any dead trees/shrubs and previously downed logs that would inhibit mowing/cutting work.The Contractor will cut existing vegetation, brush, and trees in treatment fields using a hydro ax or rotary ax brush cutter.All vegetation must be cut as close to flush with the ground as possible without impacting surrounding soil with cutting head. Stump height must be no greater than two (2) inches above ground level.Stumps and other debris must be cut low and sufficiently shredded so that a standard tractor-mounted brush-hog mower with mower deck at 8-inch height can traverse the site.The Contractor will remove from the treatment areas all cut material, including boles, logs, limbs, and tops, and any dead trees/shrubs or previously downed logs exceeding 10 inches in diameter.Trees may be cut into firewood or logs and/or chipped. All wood materials (firewood, logs, chips) become the property of the Contractor and must be removed from the State Game Area by the Contractor.Chips and small slash left by a hydro-ax mower or similar brush cutter may be left on the ground provided no piles or mounds of debris are created.If prescribed by the DNR Project Manager, cut and downed material may be placed on brush piles created along field edges.The Contractor shall minimize use of equipment on steep slopes and avoid operating equipment (harvesting, skidding, etc.) on steep slopes unless absolutely necessary.Prior to completion of work, the Contractor will level any ruts or holes four inches or deeper, or mounds of dirt four inches or higher created by the Contractor anywhere on the site.At the completion of the project, the Contractor will remove as must as possible any residual wood chips left in the staging area. Any remaining chips must be spread evenly within the staging area and no more than one inch deep.
