Specifications

The bridge along Main Street which crosses the California Aqueduct currently has capacity for only four lanes, two ineach direction. The Citys Master Plan of arterial highways identifies Main Street as a major arterial roadway, which hasa total of six lanes, three in each direction from Interstate 15 to Eleventh Avenue. In addition, the completion of Walmarthas impacted Main Street with additional traffic and new retail developments within the Walmart Shopping Center willhave further impact. As a result, the bridge will have to be widened to accommodate the ultimate configuration of MainStreet. The widening project has many potential issues; the chief issue being interaction with the Department of WaterResources (DWR). Other issues involve a potential retro-fit of the existing bridge structure to meet the new Stateseismic requirements, potential environmental issues, and involvement of Caltrans given its proximity to Interstate 15.The first phase of the project will include preliminary design and the issues associated with that design, including right-ofway,environmental clearance, and outside agency coordination. Cost estimates will also result from this project phase.Phase 2 will involve acquisition of the necessary right-of-way, and construction.
